Cozy Suburban Patio

Solution: A patio, fire feature, seat wall, and walkway combine to enliven the backyard of this home in Hampshire, Illinois. A running bond of large, light grey concrete pavers serves as the main hardscape surface, edged by a running bond of smaller, darker grey pavers. Landscape units and caps in the same two colors form a seat wall that frames a corner of the patio, and a fire pit kit in the same colors anchors the fire feature at another corner.

Simple, but Comfortable

The backyard of this suburban home in Hampshire, Illinois, was transformed from a flat lawn into a simple, cozy outdoor living space with an assortment of pavers, landscape units, and caps.

A running bond of light grey GRAND XL DISCOVER PAVERS® bordered by darker grey 4x8 ELEMENTS™ PAVERS makes up the surface of the rectangular patio. In one corner, a seat wall built of Smooth UNITY™ LANDSCAPE UNITS and Medium Smooth SUMMIT STONE® Wall Cap mimics the colors of the patio surface.

Another corner of the patio leads to the fire feature, where an identical running bond of GRAND XL DISCOVER PAVERS lies at an angle to the patio’s pavers. A Smooth SUMMIT STONE® Circle Fire Pit Kit with a Grand CREST™ Fire Pit Cap in the same colors sits low at the center of the circle, leaving plenty of room for chairs.

At the far side of the patio, a pair of steps built from Grand DISCOVER PAVERS® and Grand CREST™ COPING PAVERS serve as the threshold to the home’s patio door. A walkway composed of the same GRAND XL DISCOVER PAVERS and 4x8 ELEMENTS PAVERS as the patio has leads to the front of the home.

The simple, modern, two-toned color palette of this home’s hardscape unifies the various spaces. It helps make the most of a modest-sized suburban yard, which now feels roomy, yet cozy and inviting.
