In 2019, nearly 80 parents and community members came together to explore innovative housing solutions for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), driven by a shared concern: What happens when we’re no longer here to care for them?
“It just wasn’t what we would want for her,” states Karen Medo, mother of Hannah, who has IDD. “We wanted a better solution.”
Shannon McKinley, a housing expert with over 25 years of experience supporting people with disabilities, recognized the gap—existing options often lacked independence, choice, or a sense of belonging.
Working with parents, advocates and professionals, she helped shape the vision for Door2Dreams, a nonprofit organization working to create a safe, inclusive neighborhood where adults with IDD can live in homes of their own, surrounded by friends and support, with freedom to make their own choices.
Creating a First-of-its-Kind Neighborhood for Individuals with IDD
Doors2Dreams is creating a first-of-its-kind neighborhood in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where adults with IDD can live independently and build meaningful relationships. At the heart of the neighborhood is the Gathering Lodge, a social and wellness hub made possible in part through a donation from the Sonnentag American Foundation, the philanthropic arm for the County Materials Family of Companies.
The Gathering Lodge will be a place for neighbors to socialize, share meals, and celebrate milestones together. It will offer hands-on programs that build life and vocational skills for residents, essential health and therapy services, and events that connect residents with the wider Stevens Point community—strengthening bonds and breaking down barriers. Programming will include:
- Community meals and social gatherings
- Group exercise and sports
- Special events and movie nights
- Practical skill‑building in cooking, nutrition, and vocational readiness
- On‑site dental, vision, and physical therapy support
These spaces allow adults with IDD to gain safe, independent housing; families to gain peace of mind knowing loved ones are supported; and the broader Stevens Point community to benefit from a model of inclusion that strengthens neighborhoods and enriches lives.
