We Are County Materials: Team Member Bill Sauter

In the summer of 1992, a young student at a local technical college was looking to make some extra spending money and gain experience in his field. That summer he spent his time at County Materials Corporation in Marathon, WI working in the block plant and running a forklift. The next summer he decided to come back and do the same work. Little did he know that starting a career at County Materials would lead to him becoming the Corporate Fleet Manager overseeing the company’s trucking operations, nearly twenty mechanic shops, and dispatch functions.

Bill Sauter's long career with County Materials is one example of how the company demonstrates its Vision of Success, Stability and Support. Bill Sauter was able to start at an entry-level position and work his way up to a key role in management within the company.

After graduating from his technical program, Bill didn’t expect to come back to County Materials, however after discussing it with his manager, he was convinced to stay. “At first, I was working many different roles, including being a mechanic, working in dispatch and driving a ready-mix truck. I enjoyed working with my truck and with the contractors on job sites,” said Bill. “Every day when I woke up, it didn’t feel like I was going into work. I liked working on the equipment in the shops and operating the equipment. This career was a fit for me from the start.”

Bill came up through several different positions, grew in ways he never thought possible, and had many major accomplishments. “I never pictured myself being able to stand up in front of a group an speak. We have driver meetings with more than 100 people sitting there listening to you. Once I got to the point I could do that confidently, it was a huge personal achievement for me. It made me relook at management positions and realize I could do this.”

Throughout Bill’s time at County Materials, the company has grown to become a leader in the industry. “This company has grown a great deal since I started here,” said Bill. “Even when the economy was down, the company took good care of everyone involved with the organization. I’ve been here a long time and family has always been number one. Knowing I am working for a stable company that has been growing, and will continue to grow, puts my mind at ease—stability is huge.”

Says Bill, “The possibilities are endless at County Materials. If you are willing to work hard, there are many opportunities in the company for you.”
