How to Care for Concrete Driveways

Enhance your curb appeal and home’s value by installing a concrete driveway. The inherent durability of concrete resists the elements and offers reduced life cycle costs compared to alternative materials. With professional installation and proper care, concrete driveways can remain in serviceable condition for 30 years or longer.

Protect your investment with these industry-recommended care practices:

  • Keep vehicles off freshly placed concrete for at least seven days
  • Seal concrete after 30 days of air drying
  • Use down sprouts to ensure proper drainage and prevent settlement cracks
  • Avoid snow and ice accumulation on concrete, especially its first winter
  • Never use deicing chemicals, such as ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride, as they may harm concrete

The Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association offers valuable technical resources for designers and contractors who provide ready-mix solutions for customers. For more information, refer to the publication titled “Caring for Concrete Driveways” on WRMCA’s website.
