Courage League Sports is an adaptive sports and recreation organization, based in Tiffin, IA, that offers year-round programming for children and adults who aren’t able to go full speed due to physical, cognitive or emotional disability. By adapting the pace, equipment, or nature of activities, Courage League Sports provides a safe, accessible environment where participants can participate at their own pace.
The idea for Courage League Sports was inspired by Jack, who at the age of eight suffered multiple strokes that permanently changed his life. Growing up, Jack loved sports and playing with his friends; however, he couldn’t play the way he used to. Frustrated by the lack of options for her son, Melissa Clarke-Wharff opened Courage Sports League for those with special needs who love to get out and play. Today, the organization serves nearly 1,000 children and adults each month through its sports leagues and adaptive swimming program.
County Materials, through the Sonnentag Foundation, provides Courage League Sports the resources needed to make recreational sports accessible to Tiffin residents of all abilities. This year, in celebration of our company’s 75th anniversary, County Materials is committed to share 75 Stories of Impact, featuring organizations that receive funding from the Sonnentag Foundation and are part of the communities where we have locations.
