County Materials helped light the flame for the Wilderness Veterans Memorial in Presque Isle, WI, by donating 15 cubic yards of ready-mix for the memorial’s construction.
The Wilderness Veterans Memorial embraces patriotism by garnering volunteers and financial support for the construction and maintenance of the notable memorial in Wisconsin’s North Woods. County Materials frequently supports our nation’s veterans and military personnel through donations to memorials like this project, and through donations to service dog programs for veterans, Never Forgotten Honor Flights, veteran family camps and more.
Ready-mix from County Materials was used to construct the foundations and footings to each of the memorial plaques and main memorial wall. Ready-mix also forms the base for nine flag polls on the site that represent each branch of the military, in addition to the US flag, Wisconsin State flag and the POW/MIA flag. At the base of the US flag there is a granite spire with an eternal flame. In total there five granite benches, twelve granite plaques, and the main honor wall, all supported by ready-mix. Each plaque summarizes a historical conflict in which the United States participated in, and the significant service of veterans in each one of those conflicts.
The memorial was dedicated on October 14th, 2017 with more than 500 guests in attendance to witness the lighting of the eternal flame. At the dedication, the memorial enshrined the names of 412 veterans. Last spring an additional 45 names were added to the memorial; there is a long waiting list for more veteran names to be added next spring.
A day does not go by without visitors at the memorial. One can often find people at the memorial with their hands on the name of a veteran, or simply sitting on benches in quiet contemplation.
