Maintaining a dairy farm takes a lot of work. When it comes to construction materials used in agricultural applications, concrete ready-mix is trusted to withstand the harsh conditions and keep the surrounding environment healthy. When the owners of this farm decided to construct a new manure pit and storage bays to handle its more than 900 milking cows, they specified ready-mix concrete to help them manage solid waste and prevent water contamination.
Before the concrete was poured, the site was leveled and excavated. The manure pit was designed with a steep decline. County Materials coordinated with the contractor to make deliveries when needed for this massive and challenging pour. Before curing, the ready-mix was grated with a heavy texture for added traction for vehicles and farm workers.
Ready-mix supplied by County Materials also proved its versatility throughout the site by creating barriers for safety and storage. Along the edge of the manure pit facing the farm, ready-mix was used to create a several-foot tall barrier to prevent any vehicles from mistakenly getting too close to the edge. Ready-mix was also used for creating the taller barriers that separated the outdoor storage bays.
Construction crews ran a drainage pipe underground to the pit, then poured ready-mix around it. The pipe protrudes into the pit for handling leachate drainage from nearby silage storage.
