Wausau's New Parking Ramp Wins Concrete Design Award
MARATHON, Wis. (February 2, 2004) The Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association (WRMCA) and the American Concrete Institute are honoring County Materials Corporation for supplying a special ready mixed concrete used to construct the Jefferson Street parking structure in Downtown Wausau. Bob Wells, manager of County Materials Ready Mix Division, will accept a 2003 Concrete Design Award at WRMCAs 25th Annual Concrete Design Award Ceremony on March 24th at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
County Materials developed a unique mix used to form columns and floors of the 350,000-square-foot parking complex. They also kept the project on schedule during frigid winter days.
The six-level, 650-vehicle covered parking structure required a concrete mix to perform for up to 100 years with minimal maintenance, as determined by a life-cycle study. The ramp replaced a smaller, inadequate one unable to accommodate the citys business growth.
Amanda Robinson, marketing director for WRMCA, says the panel of judges found three main areas of the project to be exceptional:

The six-level, 650-vehicle covered parking structure required a concrete mix to perform for up to 100 years with minimal maintenance, as determined by a life-cycle study. The ramp replaced a smaller, inadequate one unable to accommodate the citys business growth.
Amanda Robinson, marketing director for WRMCA, says the panel of judges found three main areas of the project to be exceptional:
- Complexity of the concrete mix designs.
- Level of challenge most of the concrete work was performed under severe winter conditions.
- Concrete composition 100% of the internal structure is ready mixed concrete (fascia is precast concrete.)
Being a cold winter, there was a concern on being able to pour concrete every day, and still get enough strength to tension the cables or strip forms. A combination of the mix design and getting warm concrete through multiple production plants was the answer, said Bob Wells, manager of County Materials Ready Mix Division.
The design and construction team for the parking structure included AP Wisconsin, Oscar J. Boldt Construction, Arnold & OSheridan Structural Engineers, Mudrovich Architects and County Materials. Along with the team, the City of Wausau will be honored at the 2003 Concrete Design Award ceremony.
