UW-Stevens Point arts building earns award for County Materials
STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Jan. 9, 2006) –The inspirational nature of the Noel Fine Arts complex at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point moved judges with the Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association to name County Materials as one of the winners in the Institutional category of its 2005 Concrete Design Awards.
The Noel building is an 80,000-square-foot addition to an existing fine arts building and includes a freestanding concrete staircase that serves as a functional focal point in the glassed-in lobby on the south side of the building. The open staircase was framed and poured over three weeks and contains about 100 cubic yards of ready-mix.
The entire project utilized more than 9,000 cubic yards of ready-mix, including 4,000 yards of a “lightweight” mixture that comprises the upper two floors that jut out off the north face of the building.
It is the second straight year County Materials has won a Concrete Design award from the WRMCA, following its honors for supplying all of the ready-mix, girders and columns for the McCleary Bridge connecting Wausau and Rib Mountain.
County Materials operates 30 locations serving the Midwest, including Custer and Stevens Point, which supplied ready-mix for the Noel building. The family-owned, American-based company is an industry leader in the manufacture and distribution of concrete block, brick, ready-mix, hollowcore, pipe, pavers, retaining walls and Aggregate finish products for residential, commercial and municipal construction and landscaping.
