Conservationist’s ‘legacy’ takes root at nature center
BARABOO, Wis. (April 26, 2007) – In life, few people appreciated nature the way Aldo Leopold did. When the foundation named in his honor officially opens Sunday, his love of the outdoors will be shared by all who visit.
The Aldo Leopold Foundation, on Levee Road, held its Grand Opening for its Legacy Center on Sunday. A key component to the center, which prides itself on using no more energy than it can produce on its own, is its innovative geothermal heating and cooling system made possible with concrete pipe from County Materials.
About 600 linear feet of 24-inch “earth tubes,”
laid in a grid 8 feet underground, comprise the system, which
keeps air consistently heated or cooled in the mid 50-degree range
year round.
“It saves a great deal of energy from having to heat negative-degree
air in the wintertime or heating hot, humid air in the summertime,”
the center’s executive director, Buddy Huffaker, told Wisconsin
Public Radio recently.
County Materials operates 30 locations serving the Midwest. The family-owned, American company is an industry leader in the manufacture and distribution of concrete block, brick, stone, ready-mix, hollowcore, pipe, pavers, retaining walls and Aggregate Finish products for residential, commercial and municipal construction and landscaping.
