Concrete block, hollowcore give apartments firm footing

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (March 8, 2007) – When residents settle into their new accommodations at Lake Calhoun City Apartments, they likely will have their minds on starting this new chapter in their lives. Thanks to the peace of mind offered by the concrete block and concrete plank supporting and surrounding them, they’ll never have to worry about the comforts of home.

Two sizes of Hollowcore Roof and Floor plank from County Materials comprise the level separating residents from two levels of underground parking. Designer Scott Anderson, of BKV Group in Minneapolis, said the hollowcore serves a vital role in the complex’s two-level underground parking structure.

“It’s the most cost-effective way to build,” he said. “It gave us a great platform.”
Anderson called for more than 100,000 square feet of hollowcore; 50,000 square feet of both 8- and 12-inch. Supporting that plank is nearly 5,000 linear feet of inverted T-beams, 900 linear feet of L-beams, and 2,300 linear feet of columns.

And Anderson chose a mix of three sizes of County Materials’ smooth and splitface concrete masonry for the 158-unit complex.

“We were looking for a contemporary classic look,” Anderson said. “We were able to achieve that look by using a variety of unit types and sizes.”

County Materials operates 30 locations serving the Midwest.
