Donation honors past, future of Stevens Point legion baseball
STEVENS POINT, Wis. (April 19, 2007) – Baseball fans will be able to reflect on the past while rooting on the future of American Legion baseball this summer at Leo “Cub” Mancheski Field in Bukolt Park.
County Materials has donated nearly 100 units of County Block® Retaining Wall System block for the construction of a triangular memorial planting bed and seat wall. The brown structure will be two courses high with a smooth cap (about 20 inches) and surround a tree planted recently to honor longtime affiliates and supporters of American Legion Post 6 and the Sixers baseball team.
“Legion ball is a good thing to keep kids off the streets,” said Jim Zblewski, longtime president of the Stevens Point American Legion Baseball Club Inc., which fields players ages 15-19. He added that the generosity of local business donations helps reaffirm their commitment to the community. “It helps a lot … and the community appreciates that.”
One needs to look no further than the team’s schedule to see its reverence to its own history. Zblewski is hoping to finish the landscaping project prior to the team’s Ed Kardach Firecracker Classic, which is scheduled for June 30-July 3 and precedes the Don Friday Invitational (July 14-16). Both tournaments follow the fifth annual Bruce Berry Memorial Junior Legion Tournament to be held June 16-18.
County Materials operates 30 locations serving the Midwest. The family-owned, American company is an industry leader in the manufacture and distribution of concrete block, brick, stone, ready-mix, hollowcore, pipe, pavers, retaining walls and Aggregate Finish products for residential, commercial and municipal construction and landscaping.
