MILLADORE, Wis (Sept. 14, 2006) – As summer wanes and academic institutions open their doors for the school year, workers are expecting students to stream through the doors of the Stanton W. Mead Education & Visitor Center at the Mead Wildlife Area.

County Pavers® (foreground) comprise the floor of the amphitheater outside the Stanton W. Mead Education &  Visitor Center at the Mead Wildlife Area in Milladore. The steps and seats consist of County Block® retaining wall units, and the façade of the visitor center (background) bears County Stone® Old World Tumbled concrete veneer. All were supplied by nearby County Materials.

More than 2,500 students, of all ages from Wausau to Stevens Point, already have visited the facility, which opened in January. County Materials donated 35,000 County Pavers® ; in Hickory, and 600 units of the County Block® Retaining Wall system, in a custom color, to enhance the entry and areas around the facility. The family-owned, Marathon-based company also supplied more than 4,500 units of County Stone® Old World Tumbled concrete masonry units for the building’ s rustic-looking exterior veneer. And County Materials donated a majority of the project’ s 177 cubic yards of ready-mix concrete.

“Concrete construction products can contribute toward our goal,” said Thomas Brown, the Stevens Point-based architect who designed the facility for the Department of Natural Resources. Brown is hoping the 6,208-square-foot structure will earn a Gold certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® and the LEED Green Building Rating System™. “We used local materials, and that includes local raw materials too.”
