WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (Dec. 7, 2006) - The Badger State became the final one to have a memorial to its fallen firefighters when it opened the Wisconsin State Firefighters Memorial recently in Ben Hanson Park along the Wisconsin River.
The memorial plaza includes a 30-foot by 30-foot open concrete area in the shape of a Maltese cross, the traditional symbol of firefighters. Atop this cross stands a life-size bronze sculpture depicting two firefighters attempting to pull a comrade to safety.
Bordering the back of this plaza is a wall consisting of 4,500 units of Heritage CollectionT Designer Concrete Brick in Coffee Blend with a smooth face. These units, donated by County Materials, form square pillars and connecting walls that support a series of six marble plates containing the names of all 198 Wisconsin firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty.
