Disabled kids will soon play ball in Allouez park
ALLOUEZ, Wis. (April 27, 2007) – The score may always end in a tie, but that doesn’t mean there are no winners in the Miracle League of Green Bay. And a donation by County Materials will help all of the baseball players and their volunteer buddies gain a firm footing on inclusiveness when the facility opens this spring in Optimist Park at Libal Street and Kalb Avenue.
County Materials donated nearly 2,000 concrete pavers to
help decorate a landscaped circle behind home plate, from
which children in wheelchairs will get to watch their peers
hit, circle the bases and score a run on the rubberized field.
County Materials also is providing about 1,000 units of Buff-colored
splitface masonry for a concession stand/restroom facility
at the site.
“The kids just love getting out there and scoring a run,”
said Paul Liegeois, executive director of the Miracle League
of Green Bay, which he founded in 2006.
Those pavers will
serve another function first. The entire playing surface,
which measures 115 feet to the outfield fence, will first
need to be glued to the concrete beneath it. The pavers will
help weigh down the seams before moving on to their home
behind the plate.
Liegeois’ chapter began with 65 children and four teams and
now boasts nearly 100 on 10 teams, ages 4-19. Participants
come from as far away as Oconto and Manitowoc. This season
will get under way June 16; games will be held at 5:30 and
7 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until early August.
County Materials operates 30 locations serving the Midwest. The family-owned, American company is an industry leader in the manufacture and distribution of concrete block, brick, stone, ready-mix, hollowcore, pipe, pavers, retaining walls and Aggregate Finish products for residential, commercial and municipal construction and landscaping.
